Are you planning to invest in a motorhome? Are you wondering whether you need a motorhome license to drive this type of vehicle?
We shed some light on the subject.
What license do I need to drive a motorhome?
Rest assured, you don't need a special driving license to drive a motorhome. As long as the GVW is less than or equal to 3.5T, a B driving license is all you need. So if you've got a license to drive a car, you're authorized to drive a streamlined or integral motorhome without having to take out a special license!
The rule differs only for HGV motorhomes with a GVW exceeding 3.5 tonnes.
Above 3.5t, there are 3 possibilities:
- If you have a heavy goods vehicle license, i.e. a C license, no problem.
- If you don't have a C driver's license, but took your driving test before January 20, 1975, good news! You benefit from an exemption. Contact your local prefecture to have your license validated.
- You're not in either of these 2 situations and you'd like to buy a motorhome with a GVW of over 3.5T? Then you still have the option of taking out a C1 license, also known as a "light heavyweight" license. This will enable you to drive a motorhome with a maximum GVW of 7.5 t... which still leaves you plenty of scope!
